Gut health trends shift toward digital monitoring and microbiome analysis
The health and nutrition industries are increasingly integrating digital monitoring with personalized products to support gut health. In Japan, Danone introduced a LINE mini-app called ‘BIO??’ designed to track lifestyle factors including diet, sleep, exercise, stress, and bowel movements. The app calculates a ‘lifestyle score’ to encourage healthier daily routines and is paired with a ‘Danone Bio 8-Day Challenge’ running from September to November 2026.
Parallel to these digital advancements, the market for microbiome analysis is growing. These tests involve laboratory genetic testing of stool samples to identify bacterial species and frequency, with costs ranging from 100 to nearly 1,000 Swiss francs. While providers claim these analyses can help treat issues like inflammation or obesity through tailored therapy, medical experts urge caution. Andreas Müller, a gastroenterologist at Klinik Hirslanden in Zurich, describes these tests as experimental, noting they only provide a momentary snapshot and that there is currently no scientifically proven standard for what constitutes a healthy gut microbiome composition.
