Gut microbiome identified as key tool for healthy aging
Research suggests the gut microbiome may play a critical role in healthy aging by influencing inflammation, metabolism, and brain function. Paweł Łabaj, a professor at Jagiellonian University, notes that scientists are increasingly distinguishing between lifespan and healthspan—the period of life spent in good health without chronic disease. Maintaining a balanced microbiome can help mitigate chronic inflammation caused by a compromised intestinal barrier.
To support gut health, experts recommend three primary practices: consuming adequate dietary fiber (ideally 25-35 grams daily) to nourish beneficial bacteria, eating slowly to aid digestion and nutrient absorption, and managing stress to protect the gut-brain axis. Dietary fiber from vegetables, fruits, and whole grains serves as essential fuel for the microbiome, though it should be increased gradually to avoid discomfort.
