Gut microbiome research explores plant diversity and allergy management

Recent research and social trends are highlighting the significant role of the gut microbiome in human health. A viral challenge encourages consuming 30 different types of plants per week—including fruits, vegetables, legumes, grains, nuts, seeds, and herbs—to increase microbial diversity. This concept is supported by the American Gut Project, which found that individuals consuming more than 30 plant varieties weekly possess a more diverse microbiome and a lower abundance of antibiotic-resistant genes compared to those eating 10 or fewer.

In a separate clinical development, researchers at Boston Children’s Hospital, supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), investigated whether fecal microbiota transplants could assist with peanut allergies. In a small phase 1 study published in Science Translational Medicine, participants received capsules containing microbes from non-allergic donors. Preliminary results showed that some participants demonstrated a higher threshold for peanut tolerance after four months. While the findings are promising, researchers emphasize that this is not yet a cure and requires larger-scale studies to confirm efficacy.
