Gut microbiota imbalance and the impact of alcohol
Dysbiosis refers to an imbalance in the composition and function of the intestinal microbiota, characterized by a reduction in beneficial microorganisms and the growth of opportunistic species. This condition can impact digestion, immunity, metabolism, and mood due to the communication between the gut and the brain. Common symptoms include frequent abdominal bloating, gas, altered bowel habits, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, skin changes like acne, and mood fluctuations such as anxiety or irritability.
Key risk factors for dysbiosis include diets high in ultra-processed foods, sugar, and saturated fats; frequent or improper use of antibiotics; chronic stress; inadequate sleep; and regular alcohol or tobacco consumption. Diagnosis is not based on a single test but involves a clinical history and persistent symptoms.
Recent studies highlight that alcohol consumption can disrupt this microbial balance. Alcohol metabolism produces toxic metabolites that can compromise the integrity of the intestinal barrier, leading to ‘leaky gut.’ This allows toxins to enter the bloodstream, potentially increasing the risk of cancers related to alcohol, such as those of the esophagus, colon, stomach, liver, and breast. Research from the MD Anderson Cancer Center indicates that alcohol weakens microbial diversity, which is essential for maintaining immune defenses and managing inflammation.
