Gut microbiota imbalance linked to weight gain, expert warns

Internal Medicine Specialist Prof. Dr. Osman Erk has highlighted the significant link between gut microbiota imbalance and weight gain. According to Erk, an increase in harmful bacteria can lead to obesity through several mechanisms: increased calorie absorption from food, disrupted appetite control due to impaired leptin and ghrelin hormone signaling, and slowed metabolism caused by low-level inflammation that promotes fat storage.

Specific bacteria, such as Firmicutes, are noted for their role in fat production. The diversity of the microbiota can be negatively impacted by stress, aging, antibiotics, certain medications (including antidepressants and birth control), air pollution, smoking, refined sugars, artificial sweeteners, and trans fats.

To maintain gut health and prevent conditions like obesity, diabetes, and liver fatty disease, Erk recommends the regular consumption of probiotic-rich foods such as yogurt, kefir, cheese, pickles, and vinegar. Probiotics may also help mitigate insulin resistance and boost vitamin and mineral levels.
