Gut Research Links Vagus Nerve to Memory and Bowel Frequency to Health
A study on rats found that signals from the vagus nerve, which connects the gut to the brain, increase acetylcholine release in the hippocampus, a region essential for learning and memory. When researchers disrupted vagus‑nerve communication, acetylcholine levels fell and the animals performed worse on memory tests. The effect was strongest when the rats ate nutrient‑rich foods, and a long‑term high‑fat, high‑sugar diet weakened gut‑brain signaling even after the diet was changed.
Another investigation of more than 1,400 healthy adults examined how often people have bowel movements. Participants who defecated one to three times per day showed the most favorable gut‑microbiome composition and lower blood levels of toxic metabolites such as indoxyl sulfate. Both constipation and very frequent bowel movements were linked to higher concentrations of these compounds, which are associated with chronic conditions including Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and cardiovascular disorders.
