Banco Nacional celebrates 112 years with focus on sustainable finance

Banco Nacional, Costa Rica’s state-owned banking institution, is marking its 112th anniversary by pivoting toward sustainable finance and community development. A central component of this strategy is the $50 million Blue Bond, the first financial instrument of its kind in Costa Rica, Central America, Mexico, and the Caribbean.

These funds are dedicated to preserving marine ecosystems, promoting responsible ocean resource utilization, and supporting vulnerable coastal communities. Legal experts note that the bank's integration of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria helps reduce regulatory and climate-related risks for investors while setting a financial benchmark for the region.
