Guwahati essential commodity prices surge amid rising food inflation

Essential commodity prices are rising sharply in Guwahati, placing significant strain on household budgets. Recent price hikes have impacted sugar, onions, and various types of rice.

Sugar and onion prices have increased by approximately Rs 10 to Rs 15 in wholesale markets and by Rs 20 or more in retail markets. Some residents suggest that the diversion of sugarcane for ethanol production may be contributing to sugar shortages and higher costs.

Rice prices have also seen substantial increases. Joha rice, a premium variety, has risen by Rs 30 per kg, moving from Rs 100 to Rs 130 per kg. Other varieties, including BPT, Aijong, and Ushna rice, have also recorded notable price climbs. These cumulative increases in staple food items are affecting both individual consumers and small business owners, such as local eateries, who face thinning profit margins.
