Five people were killed and one injured during a shooting at Hotel Bilas Inn in the Bora Service area of Guwahati, Assam, on Monday night. The victims include the hotel owner, Helena Bharali, her brother Bhudev Bharali, her son Devarshi Kashyap, her daughter-in-law Rinika Kashyap, and a family associate, Narayan Das. The sole survivor, caretaker Satyendra Pathak, is reported to be in stable condition at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital.

Guwahati Police Commissioner Dr. Partha Sarathi Mahanta stated that preliminary investigations suggest the attack was triggered by a property dispute regarding the hotel’s lease agreement. The accused, identified as the leaseholder Ghanakanta Gogoi, was arrested within an hour of the incident. Police recovered a licensed .32-bore pistol used in the shooting.

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by Joint Commissioner of Police Ankur Jain has been formed to conduct a thorough investigation. Reports have surfaced regarding the accused’s background, including a 2024 police complaint in Jorhat involving allegations of misrepresenting his identity during a business dispute. The incident has prompted criticism from opposition leaders regarding the local law and order situation.
