Guwahati student death investigation: Police arrest boyfriend after suspicious homestay death
Police in Guwahati are investigating the suspicious death of Nimisha Thakuria, a 22-year-old sociology student at Gauhati University. Thakuria was found unconscious at Rudra’s Kitchen, a homestay in the Garal/Azara area, and was later declared dead at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital.
Authorities have arrested 26-year-old Ashik Ali, who was staying at the homestay with the victim. Ali claims that Thakuria died by suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan. However, investigators have not accepted this account, noting that injury marks were found on her body. Furthermore, Thakuria’s family reported receiving a distress call from her at approximately 2 a.m., in which she allegedly stated, “Maa, they are beating me. They are kicking me in my chest. I cannot breathe.”
The investigation is also scrutinizing the homestay’s operations, as preliminary findings suggest guests may have been accommodated without proper documentation. The death has sparked local protests in the Dharapur area, with some demonstrators making unverified allegations regarding the nature of the relationship between the deceased and the accused. A post-mortem report is expected to provide definitive evidence regarding the cause of death.
