Guwahati police arrest man in Gauhati University student death case

Police in Guwahati, Assam, have arrested 26-year-old Ashiq Ali in connection with the death of Nimisha Thakuria, a 22-year-old sociology student at Gauhati University. Investigators have filed criminal charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including murder, gang rape, wrongful confinement, and causing grievous hurt.

Thakuria was found unconscious near the Garal Primary Health Centre in the early hours of Saturday after reportedly calling her mother to report being physically assaulted. She was later declared dead at the Guwahati Medical College and Hospital. While Ali has claimed the victim committed suicide by hanging, authorities are investigating the circumstances of her injuries and death.

In a recent development, authorities arrested a homestay worker, Mintu Ali, who allegedly supplied alcohol to the pair on the night of the incident and assisted in bringing Thakuria to the premises. The homestay in Dharapur where the pair had been staying has been sealed by police, as investigations revealed that required identification documents and guest records were not maintained. The investigation is ongoing as officials await the results of the post-mortem report.
