Guy Parmelin calls for multilateralism at UN General Assembly

Swiss President Guy Parmelin addressed the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, calling for increased international cooperation and a return to multilateralism. Using Switzerland's geography as a metaphor, Parmelin stated that natural barriers can become places of encounter and that dialogue is not a sign of weakness.

Parmelin warned that the world is at a turning point, noting that fundamental principles of the UN Charter—including the prohibition of force and respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity—are being openly violated. He emphasized that international relations should be based on common rules rather than the influence and power of individual states.

Furthermore, Parmelin highlighted the economic consequences of declining trust between nations, noting a rise in protectionism. He observed that global supply chains, built over decades of interdependence, are being reorganized or collapsing due to geopolitical tensions. He argued that economic resilience is achieved through broad relationships, new partnerships, and open exchange between world regions.
