Guy Ritchie’s ‘In the Grey’ Criticized for Marketing Gay Lead Couple

Guy Ritchie’s latest action film, *In the Grey*, opened with a $70 million budget but grossed only about $23.7 million worldwide, making it a commercial disappointment. The story follows two elite fixers, Sid (Henry Cavill) and Bronco (Jake Gyllenhaal), who are portrayed as a long‑term gay couple, a relationship presented as ordinary background to the action.

Some critics, citing a Los Angeles Blade review that described the couple’s depiction as a “slow reveal” and accused the studio of “teasing” the gay angle, argued that the film’s marketing downplayed the relationship and thus sabotaged its performance. Others countered that if the studio truly feared the gay content, it would have altered the story during development rather than burying it, and that the film’s modest box‑office results stem more from competition and audience interest than from its handling of sexuality.

The debate highlights ongoing tensions about visibility versus conspicuousness of LGBTQ+ characters in mainstream action movies.
