Guy Verhofstadt under investigation over EU Parliament intern supervision
Former Belgian Prime Minister and former Member of the European Parliament Guy Verhofstadt is under investigation by Belgian federal authorities. The probe, conducted on behalf of the European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO) and the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF), focuses on the supervision of interns within the European Parliament.
The investigation covers the period between 2009 and 2019, during which Verhofstadt served as the chair of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) parliamentary group.
Verhofstadt’s lawyers stated that OLAF requested information regarding the supervision of several interns, but emphasized that Verhofstadt did not personally participate in the day-to-day professional management of the interns. They noted that he has not yet been questioned, no formal charges have been filed, and he is cooperating fully with the authorities. The EPPO has declined to comment on the ongoing investigation.
