Guyana and China seek to expand cooperation in new sectors

Guyana and China are seeking to expand their 54-year diplomatic relationship into new sectors, including renewable energy, smart infrastructure, agriculture, fisheries, and modern transportation. Prime Minister Mark Phillips highlighted these opportunities during a reception hosted by the Chinese Embassy to commemorate China’s National Day.

Phillips noted that Guyana’s ongoing economic diversification provides scope for increased trade and commercial engagement. He cited existing successful collaborations such as the Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge, constructed by China Railway Construction Corporation International, and the development of six regional hospitals.

Additionally, the Prime Minister acknowledged the long-standing contributions of Chinese medical teams, which have provided treatment to over one million patients since the 1990s. The bilateral relationship also encompasses education and human resource development through initiatives like the Chinese Government Scholarship Programme.
