Guyana and Cyprus launch new affordable housing initiatives

Guyana’s Housing Ministry, through the Central Housing and Planning Authority, has issued an invitation for Expressions of Interest to construct 400-square-foot, one-bedroom social housing units. This initiative, announced by President Irfaan Ali, aims to support 5,000 beneficiaries, specifically targeting extremely vulnerable groups such as single mothers facing economic challenges, people living with disabilities, and the elderly.

The proposed units will be equipped with essential amenities including a toilet, bath, ceiling, tiles, and basic kitchen cupboards. Contractors must submit detailed documentation regarding equipment, financing, construction methodology, and personnel expertise by September 21.

In Cyprus, the interior ministry has clarified details for two new affordable housing schemes. The first involves allocating state-owned plots to Cypriot households based on strict income and residency criteria. Eligible applicants must be under 45 and meet specific gross annual income thresholds ranging from €45,000 to €65,000 depending on family size. The second scheme allows existing homeowners to construct additional floors for family members, even if the building has reached its permitted density.
