Guyana and Fiji expand healthcare workforces through training

Guyana and Fiji are implementing measures to strengthen their respective healthcare workforces through specialized training and new medical personnel.

In Guyana, the first cohort of the Digital Health Training Institute has graduated. Fifteen specialists completed 17 training modules to prepare for roles within the Ministry of Health. These specialists will support the country’s transition to technology-driven healthcare, including the management of Electronic Health Records, telemedicine, pharmaceutical systems, and AI-supported diagnostic tools. Minister of Health Dr Frank Anthony emphasized that technological advancement must be matched by a workforce capable of sustaining these systems.

In Fiji, the government is preparing to integrate more than 240 newly trained doctors into the public health system. Health Minister Dr Atonio Lalabalavu stated that 121 medical doctors are expected to complete internships by July 2027, with an additional 121 interns scheduled to begin in January 2027. Recruitment for these roles will be determined by funded positions, facility staffing needs, and clinical service priorities to ensure a sustainable medical workforce.
