Guyana and Saint Lucia prioritize agricultural innovation and food security

Guyana and Saint Lucia are observing Agriculture Month and World Food Day 2026 with a focus on transforming their respective agrifood sectors through innovation and sustainability.

In Guyana, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is highlighting the need for investment in technology, research, mechanization, and precision agriculture. FAO Representative Dr. Gillian Smith noted that these advancements, alongside climate-smart practices, are essential for building a stronger food system and supporting the country’s leadership in the CARICOM region.

In Saint Lucia, Minister for Agriculture Lisa Jawahir emphasized the necessity of strengthening national capacity to ensure food self-sufficiency. The national priority involves increasing investment in local production, reducing food loss, and encouraging youth participation in the sector. The initiative promotes the principle of “Grow what we eat and eat what we grow,” calling on consumers and businesses to support local producers to withstand climate shocks and improve livelihoods.
