Guyana and Sri Lanka Record Major Drug Seizures in 2026

The Customs Anti‑Narcotic Unit (CANU) in Guyana reported seizing more than 250 kg of cocaine and 1,400 kg of marijuana in the first half of 2026. Director James Singh said the intelligence shared by CANU also helped partners intercept a vessel carrying four tonnes of cocaine destined for West Africa, highlighting Guyana’s growing role in international counter‑narcotics efforts.

Separately, the Sri Lanka Navy intercepted a dinghy off Kalpitiya on 30 June, confiscating about 935,000 illegal pharmaceutical capsules and arresting one suspect. Authorities noted the haul as one of the largest recent seizures of contraband medicines in the region and emphasized ongoing naval vigilance against smuggling in Sri Lankan waters.
