Guyana Attorney General reflects on history of democratic struggles
Guyana’s Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall, has reflected on the nation’s political history, emphasizing the importance of protecting democratic governance and electoral integrity.
Nandlall detailed a decades-long struggle by the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) to defend free and fair elections, citing several historical periods of alleged manipulation. He noted that the 1968 elections were impacted by the introduction of overseas voting, while the 1973 elections saw the exclusion of international observers and the use of proxy and postal voting. He also referenced the 1980 elections and a period of political repression that included the killing of prominent figures like Dr. Walter Rodney.
A major turning point occurred on October 5, 1992, when the People’s Progressive Party Civic secured 32 of the 65 seats in the National Assembly, ending 28 years of rule by the People’s National Congress. Nandlall argued that understanding these historical lessons is essential for younger generations to ensure that strong electoral institutions and democratic safeguards remain in place.
