Guyana Audit Office seeks to expand oil and gas oversight

The Audit Office of Guyana is working to increase its capacity to oversee the country’s growing oil and gas sector. Auditor General Deodat Sharma revealed that previous attempts to secure funding for this initiative were rejected by the previous Public Accounts Committee (PAC).

Sharma intends to resubmit the proposal to establish a specialized oil and gas section once the new PAC is reconstituted. This unit would function similarly to the office’s existing forensic and performance audit sections. To prepare for this expansion, at least one official within the office has already obtained a doctorate in oil and gas auditing to address the current shortage of specialized personnel.
