Guyana authorities arrest four more foreigners in illegal mining crackdown

Authorities in Guyana have arrested four additional non-nationals during an expanded crackdown on illegal mining in the Potaro mining district of Region Eight. This follows the recent detention of five other non-nationals, including Venezuelan citizens, at a nearby operation.

The Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) Corps of Wardens and the Guyana Police Force conducted a sweep of the area, discovering several excavators and trucks concealed within the jungle. Seized items also include dredges, generators, water pumps, metal detectors, and other mining equipment.

The Ministry of Natural Resources stated that all non-nationals previously apprehended for unauthorized mining activities are being deported. The Ministry reiterated a zero-tolerance policy for illegal mining and emphasized that all stakeholders must comply with national mining and environmental laws.
