Guyana begins Amerindian Heritage Month 2026 with interfaith service
The Ministry of Amerindian Affairs launched Amerindian Heritage Month 2026 with an interfaith prayer service at the Umana Yana. This year’s observance is held under the theme, “Observing our Cultural Heritage during our Diamond Jubilee.”
Minister of Amerindian Affairs Sarah Browne-Shadeek stated that the ceremony serves as an opportunity to give thanks for the past year and seek divine guidance for the future. During her remarks, she acknowledged the hardships faced by many families following the sinking of the M.V. Barima, which resulted in loss of life. She expressed hope for a year with fewer accidents and misfortunes.
The month-long celebration aims to showcase Indigenous traditions, foods, crafts, and attire. Planned activities include the Heritage Games, the Amerindian Heritage Pageant, and various cultural nights. The official opening is scheduled for September 1 at the Sophia Exhibition Centre.
