Guyana calls for global action against digital violence toward women

Guyana’s Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Dr. Vindhya Persaud, has called for increased international cooperation to combat digital violence against women. Speaking at the Forum of Women Parliamentarians during the 153rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Arusha, Tanzania, Persaud emphasized the need for global accountability measures to protect women in public life.

Persaud highlighted that the rise of digital abuse, specifically coordinated online harassment and artificial intelligence-generated sexual images, poses a significant threat to women’s participation in politics and public service. She noted that such violence can damage reputations and undermine the confidence of women seeking to influence decisions regarding peace, security, and economic development.

To address these issues, Persaud cited Guyana’s existing legal protections, including its cybercrime legislation and the Family Violence Act 2024, which integrates civil and criminal measures to combat abuse.
