Guyana Civil Aviation Authority warns of animal runway incursions
The Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has issued a warning regarding the increasing frequency of animals crossing aerodrome runways across the country. The authority condemned any acts that obstruct aviation operations, stating that the deliberate or negligent release of animals onto runways poses a direct threat to passengers, flight crews, and aircraft.
The warning follows an incident involving a Trans Guyana Airways (TGA) Cessna Caravan that overshot the Mabaruma airstrip in Region One. The pilot reportedly had to take evasive action to avoid an animal on the runway, resulting in a runway excursion that caused aircraft damage and at least one injury. TGA has expressed ongoing concern regarding animal and human invasions at hinterland airports, noting that these locations are currently undergoing expansion but lack required supervision.
Under the Civil Aviation Act 2018, causing an animal to trespass on aerodrome land is a criminal offense. Individuals found responsible may face a fine of one million dollars and imprisonment for six months. The GCAA, in partnership with law enforcement, has pledged rigorous enforcement to ensure aviation safety.
