Guyana completes $17 million National Quality Infrastructure project
Guyana has successfully completed a $17 million National Quality Infrastructure (NQI) project aimed at enhancing the testing, measurement, and certification capabilities of the Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS). Supported by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the initiative seeks to help micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) meet international standards to improve competitiveness in both domestic and export markets.
The investment addressed critical gaps in laboratory facilities, equipment, and technical expertise. Key improvements include the establishment of a dedicated laboratory for calibrating large weights, a volumetric laboratory for accurate volume measurements, and specialized spaces for thermometer, time, and frequency calibration. Additionally, the bureau has expanded its inspection capacity, including a new structure for testing high-capacity hanging scales.
By strengthening the national system of measurement and conformity assessment, the program aims to reduce market frictions such as rejected shipments, contract delays, and product recalls. While some services are currently available to the public, additional services are expected to launch following further staff training.
