Guyana: Concerns rise over civil liberties and press freedom
Guyana is facing growing scrutiny regarding civil liberties and press freedom following recent incidents involving political figures and law enforcement.
Lincoln Lewis, General Secretary of the Guyana Trades Union Congress, has warned that the detention of Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed and his staff poses a threat to the rule of law and freedom of movement under President Irfaan Ali’s administration. The controversy stems from an October 12 incident involving gunfire near the residence of a senior police official, which led to charges against Mohamed and his associates. Lewis argued that such state overreach could create a climate of fear for citizens who disagree with political authorities.
Simultaneously, media workers Courdel Jones of LiveWire News and Mikhail Rodrigues, known as the Guyanese Critic, have reported fearing for their lives after being indefinitely banned from attending press conferences held by the Opposition Leader’s Office. The journalists described the ban as an attack on the public’s right to information and have called on the Guyana Press Association to condemn the move, citing concerns that being publicly singled out by a political figure could lead to physical harassment.
