Guyana considers permanent farmers' markets to lower living costs
President Irfaan Ali has announced that the Guyanese government is considering the establishment of permanent farmers’ markets nationwide. The initiative aims to reduce the cost of living by providing farmers with direct market access, thereby bypassing middlemen and reducing the “exorbitant profit lines” currently charged by retailers.
Ali noted that while the government has implemented various measures, such as eliminating excise taxes on fuel and providing subsidies for fertilizer and production costs, structural changes are necessary to address rising prices. He emphasized that cash grants alone cannot solve the issue of inflation.
In a related development regarding local market infrastructure, the President also announced plans to install additional sheds at the Hydronie/Parika Market. This follows feedback from vendors seeking better protection from weather elements. Funding for these improvements will be transferred to the regional administration, with construction expected to begin within six to eight weeks.
