Guyana Consulate General in New York Leads Diaspora Vigil for MV Barima Victims
The Consulate General of Guyana in New York, under Ambassador Mike Brotherson, organized a diaspora prayer vigil on Friday evening to mourn the victims of the MV Barima tragedy and to show support for the families and survivors. The event was officially sanctioned by the Guyanese government and served as a space for collective remembrance, reflection and solidarity among Guyanese living abroad.
Multiple other vigils were held in Guyana and in U.S. diaspora communities, with community groups arranging gatherings in Queens and Brooklyn. Officials emphasized that such vigils should not be politicised and that the Consulate acted in line with government protocols, awaiting broader plans before acting.
