Caribbean CXC exam results show math gains and new modular certificate launch

The Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) has released preliminary results for the 2026 CAPE and CSEC examinations, revealing mixed trends across the region. While mathematics pass rates showed improvement in several territories, including Jamaica and Guyana, the subject remains a significant challenge. In Jamaica, the CSEC mathematics pass rate rose to 48.7 per cent, while Guyana reported an increase to 34.5 per cent. To address persistent underperformance, CXC has officially launched the Caribbean Targeted Education Certificate (CTEC), a modularized approach designed to break subjects into manageable components.

Despite academic gains in some areas, significant concerns have emerged regarding student absenteeism and well-being. Approximately 35,900 candidates—roughly 35 per cent of those registered—did not attend their exams. Experts have attributed this to a fear of failure and psychological shifts in students. Additionally, education advocates are calling for greater transparency in reporting, specifically requesting detailed breakdowns of high-tier grade attainment to better align with international university standards.

In Guyana, there was also a notable expansion in vocational certification, with over 2,800 students expected to receive Caribbean Vocational Qualifications (CVQs). Overall, the regional CSEC pass rate stood at 72.18 per cent, while the CAPE pass rate reached 93.5 per cent.
