Guyana debates resource management and domestic refinery plans
Guyana is facing internal discussions regarding the management and strategic utilization of its vast natural resources, including oil, gas, gold, diamonds, and arable land. Concerns have been raised about the lack of detailed data regarding the quantity and quality of these resources, which may hinder the ability of policymakers to negotiate effective investment contracts with foreign entities.
There are calls to establish a state-owned sovereign wealth fund to manage revenue from non-renewable resources for future generations. Simultaneously, President Irfaan Ali has proposed the creation of a national oil company focused on a domestic refinery and expanded fuel-storage capacity. This initiative aims to secure the local supply chain and potentially position Guyana as a supplier of refined products to the CARICOM region. However, critics have questioned the economic specifics of this plan, including financing, ownership, and the potential debt burden on taxpayers.
