Guyana Deputy Police Commissioner placed on leave amid rape allegations

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) has placed Deputy Commissioner of Police Fizal Karimbaksh on administrative leave following allegations of rape and threatening behavior. The accusations were reportedly made by a female police inspector who worked under him. The allegations include sexual assault and threats to life, including an incident involving a firearm.

Commissioner of Police Dr. Clifton Hicken has established a team to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation into the matter. As part of the immediate response, the female inspector has been transferred from the Special Organised Crime Unit (SOCU), which Karimbaksh also heads, to Regional Police Division 4 ‘A’.

Home Affairs Minister Oneidge Walrond previously indicated that Karimbaksh should be placed on leave pending the investigation. The move follows significant pressure from civil society organizations, activists, and political parties demanding accountability for senior officials accused of sexual violence.
