Guyana Development Bank to offer microcredit for Indigenous entrepreneurs
Minister of Amerindian Affairs Sarah Browne-Shadeek is urging Indigenous youth in Guyana to prepare business plans to utilize upcoming financing opportunities through the Guyana Development Bank. The minister noted that the bank is expected to be a “game changer,” providing a new tier of financing aimed at individual and group-level entrepreneurship rather than just village-wide allocations.
Under the proposed framework, eligible small and medium enterprises (SMEs), young entrepreneurs, women, and persons with disabilities may access microcredit of up to G$3 million. This financing is intended to feature zero interest and no collateral requirements for specific sectors, such as tunnel-house agriculture and transportation services. Additionally, a co-investment model may allow SMEs to access up to G$7 million at preferential rates through participating commercial banks.
Budget 2026 allocates US$100 million for the Guyana Development Bank. While the initiative aims to support hinterland development and mobility, officials have clarified that the announcement is a call for preparation. Prospective applicants are advised to wait for official notices regarding launch dates, application portals, and eligibility guidelines before submitting documents.
