Guyana economic growth projected at 22.3% by IMF

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has released its 2026 Article IV Consultation report for Guyana, highlighting exceptional economic growth alongside calls for improved fiscal governance. The Fund projects real GDP to grow by 22.3% in 2026, following a 19% expansion in 2025. While the hydrocarbon sector remains a primary driver, the non-oil economy also showed significant dynamism, expanding by 14% in 2025 due to gains in construction, agriculture, mining, and manufacturing.

Despite the positive outlook, the IMF urged the Guyanese government to strengthen oversight of public spending and improve transparency in managing oil revenues. Key recommendations include resolving outstanding cost-oil audits, enhancing compliance with public procurement rules, and reinforcing anti-corruption safeguards. The Fund also advised transitioning from broad consumer subsidies to more targeted assistance for vulnerable populations and suggested that a larger share of revenues should be saved if oil prices remain high to ensure long-term fiscal stability.
