Guyana emphasizes indigenous language preservation during Heritage Month
During Guyana’s Amerindian Heritage Month, Minister of Health Dr. Frank Anthony has called for increased efforts to preserve the nation’s indigenous languages. Highlighting that UNESCO has identified these languages as endangered, Dr. Anthony urged indigenous communities and younger generations to actively speak, write, and use their traditional tongues to prevent them from disappearing.
In a related celebration of indigenous contributions, the Guyana Fire Service is recognizing the achievements of indigenous professionals. Among those highlighted is Yaneira Kenswil, a 29-year-old emergency medical technician from the village of Waramadong. Kenswil, who is currently a third-year medical student, has served in emergency services for nine years, citing her heritage as a source of strength and resilience in her medical career.
