Guyana evaluates bids for Amaila Falls Hydropower Project

Guyana is currently evaluating bids for the Amaila Falls Hydropower Project, a major renewable energy initiative located in Region Eight. President Mohamed Irfaan Ali stated that a decision regarding the preferred proposal and its structure could be made in the coming weeks.

The project is designed to deliver a minimum of 165 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy to the national grid. The government is seeking a design, build, finance, and operate arrangement supported by a power-purchase agreement. This initiative is a key component of Guyana’s Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) 2030, which aims to diversify the nation's energy mix through hydropower, solar, and natural gas.

During a meeting in New York, the United States Export-Import (EXIM) Bank expressed interest in financing the project. The project was previously advanced over a decade ago but faced setbacks in 2013 due to disagreements over parliamentary support.
