Guyana expands housing and economic support for Amerindian communities

The Guyanese government has reaffirmed its commitment to expanding housing and economic opportunities for Amerindian communities. Speaking at the Amerindian Heritage celebrations at Kuru Kururu, Minister Kwame McCoy emphasized that the administration aims to ensure indigenous families benefit from the nation’s economic growth.

Key housing initiatives include developments along the Linden-Soesdyke Highway, specifically targeting locations such as St. Cuthbert’s Mission, Hararuni, Yarrowkabra, and Hyde Park. The government is also working on a program to provide 500 houses specifically for single-parent women.

To support economic advancement, the government is focusing on opportunities for Amerindian entrepreneurs and small vendors. Minister McCoy noted that the upcoming Guyana Development Bank is expected to provide additional resources for local business ventures. President Irfaan Ali also attended the festivities to support local vendors and residents.
