Guyana extradition hearing probes Mohamed arrest surveillance

The extradition proceedings for businessman Nazar Mohamed and Azruddin Mohamed have entered a critical phase as the cross-examination of Special Branch head Senior Superintendent Prem Narine approaches 20 hours. The legal proceedings focus on the police operation that led to the arrests of the two men on October 31, 2025.

Defense attorney Siand Dhurjon has questioned Narine regarding the specifics of the surveillance and arrest, including whether a Special Branch vehicle followed Azruddin Mohamed and the extent of police presence during the operation. Narine testified that after obtaining warrants, police checked multiple locations before locating Mohamed on Smyth Street.

The two men are wanted in the United States to face charges related to an alleged multimillion-dollar gold export, tax evasion, and money-laundering scheme. Chief Magistrate Judy Latchman has cautioned the defense regarding the scope of questioning, ruling some inquiries irrelevant, while noting that the evidence being tested could have consequences ‘for generations to come.’
