Guyana faces agricultural water rationing amid El Niño dry spell

Guyana is facing a potential water rationing crisis for its agricultural sector due to a prolonged dry spell and rising temperatures linked to El Niño conditions. Chief Hydrometeorological Officer Dr. Garvin Cummings warned that rationing may become essential to protect water supplies if current trends continue.

Rice farmers on the West Coast of Berbice have reported significant difficulties, specifically regarding the Mahaica-Mahaicony-Abary (MMA) Water Conservancy. Farmers claim the conservancy was closed earlier than the scheduled August 31 date, leaving them without sufficient water for their crops. While MMA officials stated that water levels have been sufficient in recent months and that the system must be managed prudently to prevent loss, farmers expressed frustration over the lack of reliable access.

Agricultural stakeholders have called for improved infrastructure, including the rehabilitation of irrigation canals, better water storage, and assistance with repairing dams damaged during previous rainy seasons. Some officials have suggested using pumping points as an alternative, though many farmers lack the equipment or funds to implement this solution.
