Guyana faces political tension and censorship concerns

Guyana is experiencing significant political friction regarding democratic inclusion and freedom of expression. Critics argue that despite constitutional objectives intended to ensure meaningful participation from various stakeholders, the country's leadership continues to exercise authority without sufficient engagement from the opposition.

Concerns have also been raised regarding increasing authoritarianism and the restriction of freedom of expression. The Guyana National Broadcasting Authority (GNBC) has been accused of using regulatory enforcement to suppress opposition voices.

These internal political struggles occur alongside heightened geopolitical tensions in the Essequibo region. Following a referendum in Venezuela, President Nicolás Maduro has expressed intentions to claim the resource-rich province, prompting Guyana to increase its military presence and seek recourse through the International Court of Justice.
