Guyana ferry captain and crew charged with murder after deadly capsizing FAST-MOVING

The 87‑year‑old MV Barima capsized on 18 July 2026 while sailing from Georgetown to the northwestern village of Port Kaituma. Officials say about 179 people were aboard; 73 passengers were confirmed dead, roughly 30 remain missing, and 76 were rescued.

Captain Kevin Price (40), chief mate Rondell Dwayne Roberts (42) and goods superintendent Delon Granderson (33) were brought before the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and charged with murder. They were remanded to prison and the case was adjourned to 3 August 2026.

Prime Minister Mark Phillips reported that two crew members, including the captain, tested positive for marijuana and that many passengers were not listed on the vessel’s manifest. President Irfaan Ali announced a commission of inquiry staffed by international legal and marine experts to investigate the disaster. Opposition lawmakers have called for the resignations of Public Works Minister Juan Edghill and Public Utilities and Aviation Minister Deodat Indar.
