Guyana’s MV Barima ferry disaster: murder charges and inquiry

The state‑run MV Barima capsized on 18 July 2026 while traveling from Georgetown to Port Kaituma. Authorities estimate 179 people were aboard; 73 have been confirmed dead and about 30 remain missing. The captain, Kevin Price, chief mate Rondell Dwayne Roberts and cargo superintendent Delon Granderson have been charged with 72 counts of murder and remanded to prison.

President Irfaan Ali has created a five‑member commission of inquiry, composed of international legal and marine experts, to investigate the sinking, vessel condition, loading practices and possible negligence. Prime Minister Mark Phillips said two crew members tested positive for marijuana and denied any intent to kill. The government announced financial assistance for victims’ families and launched the HEART Initiative for long‑term support. Public protests have erupted in Den Amstel and other communities demanding justice and ministerial resignations. Salvage operations are deemed unsafe owing to the wreck’s fragile condition.
