Guyana ferry tragedy underscores aging fleet amid US energy partnership push

The United States hosted a US‑Guyana Investment Enabling Forum in Washington on July 23 2026, where Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau and senior officials promoted American companies to lead Guyana’s rapidly expanding oil‑driven energy and infrastructure sectors. The forum stressed strengthening investor confidence and expanding U.S. commercial engagement in the country’s energy future.

Two days later, the 87‑year‑old ferry MV Barima capsized off Guyana’s coast on July 19 2026. Of the 179 passengers, 65 were confirmed dead, 76 rescued and roughly 38 remain unaccounted for. The government deployed 19 vessels, three aircraft and salvage teams planning to use marine airbags to right and tow the vessel, highlighting the stark contrast between billions of oil revenue and an aging transport fleet.
