Guyana Fire Service installs 35 new fire hydrants to boost safety

The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) has installed 35 of the 200 new fire hydrants it acquired, placing them in Georgetown and along the East Bank, East Coast, West Bank and West Coast of Demerara. Senior Fire Officer Rovin Thomas said the programme aims to have all 200 hydrants in place by the end of 2026 while continuously servicing existing units.

The GFS identified about 150 non‑operational hydrants across Regions 3, 4, 5 and 6 and is prioritising vulnerable, high‑risk sites such as government and high‑rise buildings, bulk fuel storage, supermarkets, schools, gas stations and malls. Approximately 1,000 hydrants already serve Georgetown, and the new installations are part of a broader effort to improve emergency response nationwide.
