Guyana Fire Service urges mandatory fire safety systems

The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) is recommending the mandatory installation of automatic sprinkler systems and smoke detectors across various building types, including residential, commercial, industrial, and hospitality facilities. This recommendation comes in response to Guyana’s economic expansion, which has led to increased construction of larger and taller buildings with higher concentrations of people and property.

The GFS is engaging with the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA) to move these safety measures from mere recommendations toward enforceable requirements. Proponents argue that fire safety should be integrated into the design and approval phases of construction rather than being treated as an optional feature based on developer preference.

Technical standards, such as the National Fire Protection Association’s NFPA 13, govern the design and installation of these systems. While smoke detectors provide early warnings for evacuation, automatic sprinklers are designed to respond to heat and suppress fires locally, often activating only the heads closest to the heat source to control a blaze before it spreads.
