Guyana Health Minister urges proactive diabetes management
Guyana’s Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony, is calling on healthcare workers to adopt a proactive approach to diabetes by identifying and managing at-risk patients before the disease fully develops. Addressing graduates of the Medex Training Programme, Dr. Anthony emphasized that early intervention can prevent severe complications, such as limb loss.
With over 60,000 diagnosed diabetics in the country and many others unaware of their status, the Ministry is promoting the use of HbA1C tests. These tests provide a three-month average of blood glucose levels, offering a more comprehensive view of sugar control than traditional tests. Additionally, the Ministry has expanded access to diabetic retinal examinations and specialized ophthalmology clinics to detect and treat retinopathy, a complication that can lead to blindness.
In a related technical development, researchers have demonstrated the potential of using machine learning to predict diabetes risk from self-reported health survey data. A study utilizing the 2015 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System developed a stacking ensemble model to categorize risk levels based on factors such as BMI, age, and blood pressure, serving as a conservative risk-awareness tool.
