Guyana to restrict vaping imports to protect youth
The government of Guyana is implementing strict restrictions on the importation of electronic cigarettes and vaping products to curb usage among children and teenagers. President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali announced the measure, citing the need to align with global regulatory trends and address the increasing accessibility of nicotine devices within the school system.
Under the impending ministerial order to be signed by Dr. Ashni Singh, the importation of vaping devices, e-liquids, and related consumables will be prohibited unless they receive explicit certification and prior clearance from the Minister of Health or designated tobacco control authorities. The Guyana Revenue Authority will be empowered to halt and seize unapproved consignments at ports of entry.
The policy has received widespread support from parents, educators, religious organizations, and the Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC). Citizens and health professionals have emphasized the potential respiratory and cardiovascular risks associated with vaping, noting that the ease of access to flavored varieties has become a significant public health concern.
