Guyana implements safeguards for elderly during digital transition

The Guyanese government is implementing measures to prevent senior citizens from being disadvantaged by the nation’s transition to fully digital public services. Starting October 1, all passport appointments will be processed exclusively online as part of a modernization effort to reduce wait times at public offices.

To mitigate digital exclusion, Minister of Public Service Zulfikar Ally announced the establishment of decentralized physical service hubs and integrated service centres. Senior citizens can visit these locations in person to access essential documents, including passports, EID cards, and birth certificates. Additionally, every Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) will feature a help desk with trained personnel to assist elders with online applications and appointment bookings.
