Guyana launches Agriculture Month 2026 and new weekly farmers' market

Guyana has launched Agriculture Month 2026 under the theme ‘Innovate, Nourish, Grow: Building a Strong and Sustainable Guyana.’ The initiative aims to showcase the sector's transformation through science, technology, and climate-smart production systems, including the use of drones, sensors, and digital platforms like the Farmers Connect app.

As part of the celebrations, the Ministry of Agriculture is introducing a weekly farmers’ market at Sophia Market every Wednesday. This initiative, announced by Minister Zulfikar Mustapha, is designed to provide consumers with affordable produce while ensuring farmers receive fairer returns for their labor. The program also includes monthly markets in various regions.

The month-long calendar features several events, including the inaugural Farmers’ Conference, the annual Honeyfest, and World Food Day activities. Minister Mustapha noted that Guyana has been recognized by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) as one of only four countries in Latin America and the Caribbean with hunger and undernourishment prevalence below 2.5 percent.
