Guyana leaders urge preservation of Indigenous culture amid national development

During Amerindian Heritage Month celebrations in Guyana, government officials emphasized the necessity of balancing national development with the preservation of Indigenous cultural identity.

Speaking at Bumbury Village, Prime Minister Mark Phillips noted that as the country undergoes rapid development, the presence of the First Peoples must remain visible, respected, and secure. He urged younger generations to learn traditional knowledge, languages, and customs from their elders, suggesting that modern education and technology should be used to strengthen rather than diminish cultural roots.

In Swan, Minister Kwame McCoy highlighted the transformation of Indigenous communities through sustained investment and inclusion. He described the heritage celebrations as vital opportunities to showcase Indigenous talent and educate the broader population about the country’s history and the contributions of its First Peoples to Guyana’s progress.
