Guyana legal proceedings involve Azruddin Mohamed and Judge Gino Persaud
During extradition proceedings in Guyana, Senior Superintendent Prem Narine testified that Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed has never been arrested, interviewed, or charged in connection with six alleged killings. Despite Narine previously identifying Mohamed as a major threat to national security, he admitted under cross-examination that he had no direct visual evidence linking Mohamed to the incidents, which included a 2015 vessel explosion that claimed three lives. Narine stated his information was based on informants and shared with “controlled officers” rather than the Crime Chief.
Separately, Attorney General Anil Nandlall denied that the Guyanese government influenced the United States’ reported decision to review the visa of High Court Judge Gino Persaud. The visa issue arose when Persaud attempted to travel to Jamaica for a judicial conference. The legal context involves a court decision by Persaud that prevented the Guyana Revenue Authority from reviewing tax assessments related to a Lamborghini purchase by Azruddin Mohamed. This vehicle was cited in a U.S. Grand Jury indictment against Mohamed and his father, Nazar Mohamed, involving allegations of underpaid duties and taxes.
